The biggest mistake I see new managers making is not delegating.
Not delegating enough leaves you with too much work to do and means that your team doesn't have a chance to learn and grow.
You know that as a manager you should be delegating tasks, but how can you know when and what to delegate?
Here's an easy system you can use:
𝟭. 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁, 𝗟𝗼𝘄 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹:
Always delegate or automate.
Delegating these tasks can free up your time for more strategic work while providing team members with opportunities to manage and complete significant work.
💡𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀:
↳ For You: Frees up time for high-impact tasks.
↳ For the Team: Offers a sense of accomplishment and helps build skills.
𝟮. 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁, 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹:
Delegate them to team members who are ready to take on more responsibility.
These tasks are demanding both in terms of time and skill and may work well as a project. Include team members who don't yet have all the skills so they can learn.
💡𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀:
↳ For You: Allows focus on strategic decision-making.
↳ For the Team: Enhances skills and prepares for leadership roles.
𝟯. 𝗟𝗼𝘄 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁, 𝗟𝗼𝘄 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹:
While these tasks are easy to complete, they can add up and consume a lot of time. Delegating these tasks can help junior team members get started with responsibility and gives you a low-stakes way of practising delegation.
💡𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀:
↳ For You: Reduces your workload and eliminates busywork.
↳ For the Team: Introduces new team members to responsibilities.
𝟰. 𝗟𝗼𝘄 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁, 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹:
These tasks require expertise but not a lot of time. You may choose to do these yourself if you have time. Delegating these tasks can help develop specific skills within your team while ensuring that their expertise is utilised effectively.
💡𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀:
↳ For You: Ensures that expertise is used without consuming significant time.
↳ For the Team: Allows team members to practice and refine their skills.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.
