Why Emotional Intelligence Matters at Work

Emotional intelligence is one of the strongest predictors of leadership success - and one of the least trained.

Managers with high EI communicate more clearly, build trust faster, stay composed under pressure, and get more from the people around them.

This practical one-day emotional intelligence training course helps managers, team leaders and aspiring leaders understand how emotions drive behaviour - their own and other people's.

Through real examples, discussion and exercises, you'll learn to communicate more effectively, strengthen relationships, defuse tension before it escalates, and build a team culture people actually want to work in.

It's not soft, feel-good fluff. It's the practical toolkit for the parts of the job that involve other human beings: the difficult conversation, the colleague you can't seem to get through to, the meeting that keeps going sideways.

By the end of this Emotional Intelligence training, you’ll be able to:

  • Recognise the five elements of emotional intelligence and apply them to leadership

  • Understand your own emotional triggers and stay composed under pressure

  • Read emotions accurately in others, including what isn't being said

  • Adapt your communication style to different personality types

  • Handle conflict and misunderstanding calmly and constructively

  • Give feedback in a way that builds trust rather than defensiveness

  • Build genuine influence without relying purely on authority

What Changes for Your Organisation with Emotional Intelligence Training

Most workplace problems aren't technical. They're two capable people who've stopped communicating well, a manager whose feedback lands badly every time, a team where nobody says what they actually think.

None of that shows up on a process map, but it costs real money in turnover, avoidance and rework.

Emotional intelligence is learnable, and it's the skill that quietly determines whether everything else works.

  • Fewer escalations - friction addressed early, while it's still a conversation

  • Stronger retention - people stay for managers who understand them

  • Better communication - across teams, seniority levels and personality types

  • More resilient managers - composure under pressure, rather than reaction

  • Psychological safety - teams where people speak up before problems grow

Understanding Emotional Intelligence

Emotional Intelligence (EI) is more than a buzzword - it’s the key to great leadership. You’ll discover how self-awareness, empathy, and social skill influence every leadership interaction. ✔ What emotional intelligence actually means in practice - and what it doesn't ✔ The five elements: self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, social skills ✔ How emotions shape decisions, behaviour and team dynamics ✔ Identifying your current EI strengths and development areas ✔ Understanding personality types using the DISC model

Self-Awareness and Self-Regulation

The best leaders know their own emotional triggers - and how to stay composed when it matters most. You’ll explore practical tools to recognise your emotional responses, manage stress, and maintain confidence under pressure. ✔ Recognising your own emotional patterns and triggers ✔ Staying calm and focused when the pressure is on ✔ Practical techniques for managing stress in the moment ✔ Using reflection to build genuine self-awareness ✔ Modelling emotional control to create psychological safety

Empathy and Social Awareness

Empathy is at the heart of great communication. This section helps you tune into others’ emotions, perspectives, and needs - building stronger connections and understanding what drives people’s behaviour. ✔ Reading emotions in others through verbal and non-verbal cues ✔ Active listening and asking better questions ✔ Adapting your approach to different personality types ✔ Understanding what drives other people's behaviour ✔ Building inclusive, trusting working relationships

Relationships, Communication and Conflict

Influence doesn’t come from authority - it comes from trust. In this module, you’ll explore how emotionally intelligent leaders communicate expectations, give feedback, and navigate difficult conversations effectively. ✔ Giving feedback that builds motivation rather than resistance ✔ Handling difficult conversations with composure ✔ Defusing conflict and repairing misunderstandings early ✔ Building influence through trust rather than authority ✔ Strengthening collaboration across teams and personality types

Putting Emotional Intelligence Into Practice

The final module brings everything together with practical exercises and real-world applications. You’ll explore how EI supports decision-making, motivation, and organisational culture - and build a plan to continue developing your leadership EQ beyond the course. ✔ Applying EI to your own real leadership challenges ✔ Using EI to support motivation, performance and wellbeing ✔ Recognising and responding to pressure in your team ✔ Creating a personal action plan for continued development

Meet Your Trainer
Mark Baglow

Hi, I'm Mark. When you book this course, you get me – not an associate, not a script read off a slide.

I've spent fifteen years in the world of education, training and development. During my career I learned the thing that still shapes every course I run: people don't remember what you tell them, they remember what they do.

My training is practical, hands-on and refreshingly jargon-free – real tools you'll use on Monday morning, not dry theory you'll have forgotten by lunch.

I'm a certified DISC analyst, and I've designed and delivered leadership, management and communication training across sectors including education, software and financial services.

I'm based in Birmingham – right in the middle of the country – so I can reach you easily for in-person training anywhere in the UK, or even internationally! I also provide live online training if that suits you better.

I keep my business deliberately personal: you deal with me directly, from first enquiry to post-course follow-up, and every session is built around your people and your real-world challenges.

Who Is Emotional Intelligence Training For?

Emotional intelligence is a skill anyone can develop, and it makes the biggest difference to trust, communication and performance.

No prior knowledge needed, and you don't have to be a manager to benefit.

This course works well on its own, and it is most powerful when paired with my 1-day or 2-day leadership and management courses.

This course is ideal for professionals who want to lead with empathy, awareness, and impact, including:

  • Managers and Team Leaders - strengthening relationships, communication and trust within their teams

  • Senior Leaders - influencing and motivating across departments and complex situations

  • Aspiring Leaders - building interpersonal awareness before stepping into management

  • HR and People Professionals - coaching and supporting others more effectively

  • Project Managers and Specialists - who rely on collaboration and influence rather than formal authority

  • Anyone who works closely with others - particularly where conflict, misunderstanding or communication breakdowns can occur

If you’re looking to understand yourself and others better - and use that insight to create a positive, high-performing team culture - this course will help you get there.
