Project Management Training for Non Project Managers

Most project management training is built for people who want to become professional project managers - full of frameworks, jargon and exam prep for a PRINCE2 or PMP qualification.

This isn't that.

My project management course is for the people who get handed projects at work - an office move, a system rollout, a new process, an event - alongside their actual job, and just need to get it done well.

Planning and managing projects can be made quicker and easier once you have a clear step-by-step method.

Whether you're going to be managing projects or supporting them as part of the team, understanding best project management practice from start to end is essential.

No certification, no theory you'll never use, no drowning in paperwork.

I teach clear, practical method for planning and delivering projects that actually land.

(I'm PRINCE2 trained and draw on the best of established methods like PRINCE2 and APM - but I've stripped out the jargon and exam overhead to leave what genuinely works on a real project.)

Manage Projects the Right Way Every Time

Effective project management has never been more important.

An astonishing 70% of projects fail - over budget, over time, or never delivering what they promised - costing businesses enormous amount of time and money.

Projects rarely due to lack of effort. It's almost always a lack of a clear, structured approach. This course gives your team that structure.

Every organisation runs a lot of projects – sometimes without actually realising it. Whether it’s launching a new product, improving processes, or managing client work, the ability to plan, organise, communicate, and adapt is what keeps everything moving forward.

Yet most people fall into project management by accident – without ever being shown a clear, practical way to do it well.

My project management course gives your team the structured approach, tools, and confidence they need to deliver successful projects from start to finish.

This programme combines core project management principles with hands-on activities, group planning exercises, and real-world examples that make the learning stick without the complicated jargon.

I can also incorporate your existing project processes and documentation to ensure the course is as relevant and impactful as possible.

Good project management isn’t about paperwork – it’s about clarity, communication, and getting stuff done!

By the end of the programme, your team will be able to:

  • Define and scope a project so everyone involved knows what "done" looks like

  • Plan with practical tools - Gantt charts, task breakdowns, milestones

  • Map stakeholders and communicate clearly with everyone involved

  • Identify and manage risks before they become problems

  • Track progress and keep things on course when reality intervenes

  • Solve problems and make decisions when projects hit obstacles

  • Close properly - hand over, capture lessons, and bank the value

You also receive 3 months of personal email support from me for any follow-up questions.

One Day or Two Day Project Management Training?

Every organisation os different, so I offer this in-house at the length that fits.

Two days (recommended).

Project management is a big topic, and two days gives it room to breathe - the full journey from start to close, with time for more group work, activities, and the opportunity to practise the tools on your own real projects. This is what I'd usually recommend as we can cover everything in detail with plenty of interaction.

One focused day.

A shorter option for teams who want a practical introduction to the essentials, or who'd rather spend the time on the specific aspects they most need - planning, risk, or stakeholder management, say. Tailored to what matters most to your team.

Not sure which fits? Get in touch and we'll work out the right shape together.

What Makes Projects Work?

Projects succeed when people have clarity, structure, and the confidence to lead. That's why I teach you a clear step-by-step process for planning and managing projects. In this opening module, we look at what effective project management really looks like in practice and explore how your organisation’s culture, communication, and ways of working shape success. We also introduce the example project you’ll build throughout the two days. ✔ Identify the characteristics of well-run projects ✔ Learn the step-by-step project management method we will use during the course ✔ Understand the most common causes of project failure ✔ Clarify your role and responsibilities within the project environment ✔ Recognise how culture, communication, and expectations influence delivery ✔ Work effectively with sponsors, stakeholders, and project teams ✔ Begin shaping the example project used throughout the course

Defining the Project Clearly

A strong start is the foundation of every successful project. ✔ This module shows you how to define your project with clarity – making sure everyone knows what you’re doing, why you’re doing it, and what success looks like. You’ll begin building the early components of your project charter/PID using our shared example. ✔ Create a clear and focused project brief ✔ Define scope and non-scope to avoid misunderstandings later ✔ Set measurable objectives and realistic success criteria ✔ Understand constraints around time, cost, quality, and resources ✔ Identify potential areas for scope creep before they happen ✔ Draft the first sections of a practical project charter or PID (Project Initiation Document) ✔ Align your project definition with business needs and priorities with a clear business case.

Planning the Project (Tools & Techniques)

This module gives you the practical tools needed to turn a concept into a realistic, deliverable plan. Working with the example project, you’ll break down the work, sequence tasks, estimate timelines and costs, and build a simple but effective schedule. ✔ Identify the tasks which need to be completed. ✔ Break a project into manageable components using a Work Breakdown Structure ✔ Turn a WBS into a structured project plan ✔ Identify task dependencies and sequence activities effectively ✔ Get hands-on building a Network Diagram for your project plan ✔ Build a clear and useful Gantt chart ✔ Understand and calculate the Critical Path ✔ Estimate time and cost using bottom-up and three-point methods ✔ Add contingency and plan resources realistically

Stakeholders & Communication

Strong communication sits at the heart of every successful project. In this module, you’ll map your stakeholders, understand their expectations, and plan communication that keeps everyone aligned and engaged. You’ll continue developing materials for the shared project example. ✔ Identify key stakeholders and analyse their influence ✔ Use power/interest grids to plan engagement ✔ Understand what different stakeholders need from your project ✔ Build a simple but effective communication plan ✔ Set up meaningful project updates and meeting routines ✔ Manage expectations and maintain trust throughout the project ✔ Handle challenging conversations with confidence

Completing the Plan & Managing Risk

A strong project plan builds confidence and secures buy-in. This module brings your scoping, planning, documentation, risks, and estimates together so that you can prepare a clear and credible PID or project plan. You’ll practise documenting risks using structured, easy-to-maintain templates. ✔ Pull all project documentation together into a coherent PID ✔ Check alignment between scope, objectives, timelines, and budget ✔ Identify risks using structured techniques ✔ Assess probability and impact to prioritise risks ✔ Build a simple, actionable risk register ✔ Agree tolerances, escalation points, and decision routes ✔ Prepare your project for approval and sign-off

Managing the Project & Staying in Control

Once the project is underway, the focus shifts to monitoring progress, managing changes, and keeping momentum. In this module, you’ll learn practical techniques for staying in control without unnecessary paperwork or bureaucracy. ✔ Track tasks, deliverables, and milestones effectively. ✔ Use your Gannt chart to quickly assess project progress and status. ✔ Learn why you can't just use the budget to track progress. ✔ Monitor timelines, budget, and resources. ✔ Spot early signs of slippage and take corrective action. ✔ Manage change requests without losing control of the plan. ✔ Use simple performance metrics (CPI/SPI at an introductory level). ✔ Run efficient project update meetings. ✔ Maintain documentation that supports delivery, not admin.

Problem-Solving & Keeping Momentum

Projects rarely run perfectly – and that’s where strong problem-solving and decision-making become essential. ✔ This session introduces practical tools for dealing with obstacles and maintaining progress, even when things get challenging. ✔ Recognise the most common project roadblocks ✔ Use structured tools like 5 Whys and fishbone diagrams ✔ Analyse impact and choose the right response ✔ Make confident decisions with limited information ✔ Navigate competing priorities between teams and departments ✔ Keep project teams engaged and motivated ✔ Maintain momentum through difficult or uncertain stages

Delivering, Closing & Learning

Closing a project properly ensures the organisation gets the full value from the work you’ve done. This final module helps you wrap up the example project, hand over deliverables, capture lessons learned and set up future projects for success. ✔ Deliver and verify project outputs confidently ✔ Hand over to business-as-usual (BAU) smoothly ✔ Close risks, contracts, and documentation ✔ Capture meaningful lessons learned for future improvement ✔ Conduct simple, constructive project reviews ✔ Strengthen stakeholder relationships after delivery ✔ Recognise the full spectrum of project success

Meet Your Trainer
Mark Baglow

Hi, I'm Mark. When you book this course, you get me – not an associate, not a script read off a slide.

I've spent over a decade running and training on real projects across education, software and financial services. I'm PRINCE2 trained - but what I teach is the practical reality of getting projects delivered, not exam theory. You're learning from someone who's actually run the projects, not just read about them.

I've spent fifteen years in the world of education, training and development. During my career I learned the thing that still shapes every course I run: people don't remember what you tell them, they remember what they do.

My training is practical, hands-on and refreshingly jargon-free – real tools you'll use on Monday morning, not dry theory you'll have forgotten by lunch.

I'm a certified DISC analyst, and I've designed and delivered leadership, management and communication training across sectors including education, software and financial services.

I'm based in Birmingham – right in the middle of the country – so I can reach you easily for in-person training anywhere in the UK, or even internationally! I also provide live online training if that suits you better.

I keep my business deliberately personal: you deal with me directly, from first enquiry to post-course follow-up, and every session is built around your people and your real-world challenges.

Who Is This Project Mangagement Course For?

This course suits anyone who plans, coordinates or delivers projects without being a full-time project manager - team leaders, managers, coordinators, and the people who quietly end up running things.

Whatever your projects look like - internal initiatives, operational improvements, events, system rollouts, cross-departmental work — the method's the same, and it works.

Many projects fail because of a lack of project management training.

Give your team the skills and confidence to manage and deliver projects successfully using a step-by-step process.

This course focuses on practical delivery skills rather than certification – giving teams tools they can actually use at work.

This course is a great fit for:

  • Professionals managing projects alongside their day-to-day responsibilities

  • Managers and team leaders responsible for delivering internal or client work

  • Those who have been given a project but haven’t had formal training

  • Project coordinators, administrators, and aspiring project managers

  • Teams who want a shared, consistent way of planning and delivering projects

  • Organisations looking to develop confidence and capability in project delivery

Good project management isn’t just for big organisations or professional project managers – it’s a core skill for anyone who wants to turn ideas into results.
