2 Day Course

Manage Projects the Right Way Every Time

Effective project management has never been more important.

Whether you’re delivering internal improvements, managing clients, or juggling multiple priorities, the ability to plan, organise, communicate, and adapt is what keeps everything moving forward.

Yet most people fall into project management by accident – without ever being shown a clear, practical way to do it well.

This 2 day course gives your team the structured approach, tools, and confidence they need to deliver successful projects from start to finish.

This programme combines core project management principles with hands-on activities, group planning exercises, and real-world examples that make the learning stick without the complicated jargon.

We can also incorporate your existing project processes and documentation to ensure the course is as relevant and impactful as possible.

Whether your team runs internal projects, operational improvements, events, system rollouts, or cross-departmental work, this course helps them plan effectively, communicate clearly, and deliver results with less stress and greater control.

By the end of the programme, your team will be able to:

  • Understand the full project lifecycle and what’s expected at each stage

  • Plan projects with clarity – defining scope, deliverables, roles, and timelines

  • Use practical tools like work breakdown structures, Gantt charts, and critical path analysis

  • Identify risks early and put realistic contingency plans in place

  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders and manage expectations

  • Track progress, monitor costs, and make informed decisions

  • Deliver projects with more control, confidence, and less stress

Project Management Course Content

For in-house training the course can be tailored to your specific requirements.

If you want more time spent on, for example, risk or budgets or team dynamics.

We can also use and adapt your existing project processes and documentation.

  • Step-by-step frameworks and templates to apply what you've learned.

  • Practical examples that can be applied to real workplace challenges straight away.

  • Certificate of Completion after the course.

What Makes Projects Work?

Projects succeed when people have clarity, structure, and the confidence to lead.

In this opening module, we look at what effective project management really looks like in practice and explore how your organisation’s culture, communication, and ways of working shape success.

We also introduce the example project you’ll build throughout the two days.

  • Identify the characteristics of well-run projects

  • Understand the most common causes of project failure

  • Clarify your role and responsibilities within the project environment

  • Recognise how culture, communication, and expectations influence delivery

  • Work effectively with sponsors, stakeholders, and project teams

  • Begin shaping the example project used throughout the course

Defining the Project Clearly

A strong start is the foundation of every successful project.

This module shows you how to define your project with clarity – making sure everyone knows what you’re doing, why you’re doing it, and what success looks like.

You’ll begin building the early components of your project charter/PID using our shared example.

  • Create a clear and focused project brief

  • Define scope and non-scope to avoid misunderstandings later

  • Set measurable objectives and realistic success criteria

  • Understand constraints around time, cost, quality, and resources

  • Identify potential areas for scope creep before they happen

  • Draft the first sections of a practical project charter or PID (Project Initiation Document)

  • Align your project definition with business needs and priorities

Planning the Project (Tools & Techniques)

This module gives you the practical tools needed to turn a concept into a realistic, deliverable plan.

Working with the example project, you’ll break down the work, sequence tasks, estimate timelines and costs, and build a simple but effective schedule.

  • Break a project into manageable components using a Work Breakdown Structure

  • Turn a WBS into a structured project plan

  • Identify task dependencies and sequence activities effectively

  • Build a clear and useful Gantt chart

  • Understand and calculate the Critical Path

  • Estimate time and cost using bottom-up and three-point methods

  • Add contingency and plan resources realistically

Stakeholders & Communication

Strong communication sits at the heart of every successful project.

In this module, you’ll map your stakeholders, understand their expectations, and plan communication that keeps everyone aligned and engaged.

You’ll continue developing materials for the shared project example.

  • Identify key stakeholders and analyse their influence

  • Use power/interest grids to plan engagement

  • Understand what different stakeholders need from your project

  • Build a simple but effective communication plan

  • Set up meaningful project updates and meeting routines

  • Manage expectations and maintain trust throughout the project

  • Handle challenging conversations with confidence

Completing the Plan & Preparing for Approval

A strong project plan builds confidence and secures buy-in.

This module brings your scoping, planning, documentation, risks, and estimates together so that you can prepare a clear and credible PID or project plan.

You’ll practise documenting risks using structured, easy-to-maintain templates.

  • Pull all project documentation together into a coherent PID

  • Check alignment between scope, objectives, timelines, and budget

  • Identify risks using structured techniques

  • Assess probability and impact to prioritise risks

  • Build a simple, actionable risk register

  • Agree tolerances, escalation points, and decision routes

  • Prepare your project for approval and sign-off

Running the Project & Staying in Control

Once the project is underway, the focus shifts to monitoring progress, managing changes, and keeping momentum.

In this module, you’ll learn practical techniques for staying in control without unnecessary paperwork or bureaucracy.

  • Track tasks, deliverables, and milestones effectively

  • Monitor timelines, budget, and resources

  • Spot early signs of slippage and take corrective action

  • Manage change requests without losing control of the plan

  • Use simple performance metrics (CPI/SPI at an introductory level)

  • Run efficient project update meetings

  • Maintain documentation that supports delivery, not admin

Problem-Solving & Keeping Momentum

Projects rarely run perfectly – and that’s where strong problem-solving and decision-making become essential.

This session introduces practical tools for dealing with obstacles and maintaining progress, even when things get challenging.

  • Recognise the most common project roadblocks

  • Use structured tools like 5 Whys and fishbone diagrams

  • Analyse impact and choose the right response

  • Make confident decisions with limited information

  • Navigate competing priorities between teams and departments

  • Keep project teams engaged and motivated

  • Maintain momentum through difficult or uncertain stages

Delivering, Closing & Learning

Closing a project properly ensures the organisation gets the full value from the work you’ve done.

This final module helps you wrap up the example project, hand over deliverables, capture lessons learned, and set up future projects for success.

  • Deliver and verify project outputs confidently

  • Hand over to business-as-usual (BAU) smoothly

  • Close risks, contracts, and documentation

  • Capture meaningful lessons learned for future improvement

  • Conduct simple, constructive project reviews

  • Strengthen stakeholder relationships after delivery

  • Recognise the full spectrum of project success
